AbstractThe main-sequence properties and the mass function of the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6171 have been studied. Deep BV CCD photometry is presented for four fields located between 2 and 5 core radii from the cluster center. The apparent distance modulus is estimated as (m-M)V = 14.63+/-0.20 using two different procedures. A luminosity function down to V approximately 23.5 has been constructed and corrected for incompleteness. A comparison with the theoretical luminosity function shows that the mass function (modeled as a power law) has a slope x approximately equals -1 down to m of about 0.6 solar mass. A comparison of the MS locus with the theoretical isochrones suggests an age of about 18 Gyr if an alpha-element enhancement is taken into account.
